Over the last 6 months I’ve realised how simple and easy it is to put something off…
I’ve been on the journey to find a fitter and healthier me and I’ve spent a hell of a lot of money on gym memberships, classes and fitness gear so why do I find myself back where I started?
Oh that’s right… excuses!
Since April I have been piling on the pounds and my weight is now back up to 17 stone which is somewhere near the weight I was when I started this fitness journey back in 2012. The most disappointing thing I guess is that I have no one to blame apart from myself. There would always be an “Event”, “Holiday” or “sickness” reason as to why I couldn’t workout or eat well and I’d catch myself saying “I’ll just have this treat and then start again tomorrow” but tomorrow never comes and then you’re fat, unhappy and kicking yourself.
Here is a list of events that hindered my workout
- -Cape Verde
- -The hottest summer ever
- -My Birthday
- -Friends Birthdays
- -Concerts in London
- -The thought of moving
- -Actually moving to Ireland
- -Not having anywhere to live
- -Settling in
- My gym isn’t open
Some of these are valid reasons and I don’t deal very well with too much stress but some of these are utter bullshit… “It’s too hot”, “It’s my Birthday”, “I’m going away”, “I’m tired after work”. I’m sorry, but last time I checked calories didn’t stop counting just because I had something on.
However… it is not too late to start again, it’s not too late to pick yourself up and get back on track.
Yes, things have been very stressful and hectic over the last two months, yes I have moved my life from the U.K. over to Ireland and yes I did live out of a hotel for two week. That hotel did have a gym though, do you know how many times I went in two week? TWICE!
Once things had started to settle down and I’d found somewhere to live the excuses carried on. I have joined a gym but it doesn’t open until next week so again the excuses came out “I don’t want to go to the gym PAYG as it’s too expensive €9.99 a go” why does that matter?! In the U.K. I was paying £25 a week to do one PT session (yes that is cheap) and now I’m moaning about paying €9.99 a session? My mindset was all wrong. I clearly didn’t have the motivation to work out.
Tuesday, I woke up feeling positive and ready to kick the excuses out and fix my mindset. I’ve paid for a month at a temporary gym (€40) it will overlap with my new membership but at least it will be cheaper than €9.99 a session. When I went to sign up I stood on the sad step which was when I saw exactly how much damage the excuses had done. It was the kick up the ass I needed to allow me to set some goals and get back to my best self.
I’ve set myself an ambitious goal of losing 5kg in the next 6 weeks, to achieve that I am going to do the following.
-Train at least 3 times a week
-Track my food on fitness pal (honestly)
-Stay in a Calorie deficit
-Give up on the excuses!
Tonight I am resting as I have a serious case of delayed muscle soreness from the last few days but tomorrow… No Excuses… I will work out.
I think the moral of the story is that the only person that is going to get annoyed and upset if you keep making excuses and putting things off, is you! You are in control of the choices you make but you have to have the motivation to make the right choices.
I’ll leave you all with a very sweaty selfie as motivation.
Don’t do what I did. Don’t give up all your hard work. Don’t put things off. Act today and see the results you want, quicker.
